Born and raised in Austin, Stan Johnson Sr. possessed a natural talent for all things mechanical. After a stint as a partner in a filling station on Barton Springs Road, he worked as a union carpenter before finding his true calling at a local AC service company. Stan made the decision to establish his own company. In 1954, he and his wife founded their own AC service company, focusing on his skills and dedication to customer service.

The initial office for Stan's was in the backyard of a residence at Denson and Guadalupe. It wasn't until the mid-1960s that central air conditioning became affordable for most central Texans. From the beginning, the Stan's Family led the way in installing and servicing air conditioners in the Austin area and continues to do so with pride today. Stan's has broadened its services to include all plumbing needs and continues to support the Austin area with a large, skilled team of plumbers.

Their workmanship is fine, however I'm unlikely to renew my service contract because of their abysmally obstructive and unhelpful customer service.

Update: Michelle states that she just called and left me a message. I don't know who she called, but it certainly wasn't me.
So, did she call the wrong person, which indicates just how chaotic their customer service is, or is it a company lie, designed to make other, potential customers, think that this is a responsive business? My vote is for the latter.
Sorry Michelle, but my original review stands.

I called Stan's and requested a service person to install a new faucet on a bathroom sink. James Goodson was prompt and very competent. He explained that because this was a pedestal sink, he would need to return with an assistant. In this first visit he examined the sink and explained the costs clearly. When he returned, he brought Kristopher Rios. Kristopher was also friendly and James helped him learn how to do the job. Not only was James good with me as a customer but he was an excellent teacher. I could not have asked for better service.

Do not ever use this company. My daughter called them tonight at 6pm for a leak that she could not shut off. They replied and also sent a text saying a plumber would be there between seven and nine pm. she called at 8:30pm asking for an update. The service said they would have someone call her with an update. NEVER HEARD FROM ANYONE. Cancelled at Nine something because she want the dogs barking and waking up her child who had to go to school the next morning. REALLY, REALLY REALLY BAD COMPANY.

Yelp

I am writing a review about Stan's Air Conditioning & Heating of Austin, Texas and my experience in contracting with Stan's to install a new Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV).

A few months ago, I contacted Stan's Air Conditioning & Heating about replacing a 20-year old Honeywell Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) that came with our house, with the more powerful and modern, Swedish Fantech ATMO 200E ERV. Energy Recovery Ventilators are used in houses to introduce outside fresh air in ""tightly"" insulated houses and are recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for that purpose. Due to the pollen in Austin, we also use our ERV to filter and circulate external air inside our 3,000 square foot house, especially during ""Cedar Season.""

We had worked with Stan's A/C previously when they installed two replacement 2.5 Ton air conditioning units and two 70,000 BTU furnaces a few years ago. Our experience was positive as well ... Stan's sent-out two complete install teams for the two air conditioning and heating systems! We were impressed with this because they were the only contractor that quoted one-day replacement service for both systems!

Similarly, we had a positive experience with the ERV install, however, the issues were different than the air conditioning install. First, Fantech has highly-rated ERV products; however, they do not have the traditional dealer network normally associated with HVAC systems. So, the contractor has to find a distributor to purchase the Fantech Energy Recovery Ventilator and arrange for the warranty service agreement - Sort of like buying a highly-rated Tesla electric car which has a warranty but no dealer network. The second issue related to the Fantech brand, is that although the brand is distributed internationally, local contractors invariably have limited experience for the admittedly small Fantech brand in the United States. So, it follows that the installation contractor generally has limited experience installing and servicing the Fantech brand. Despite these issues -and a few others - I was impressed with the ""Can Do"" attitude of the team at Stan's who take pride in solving Any HVAC problem a homeowner is likely to encounter.

Stan's team showed determination in solving a multitude of issues related to the install, many of which were not their fault, such as when the distributor sent-out the wrong ERV unit with incomplete paperwork that did not specify the model that we had purchased, and no model markings on the box. At this point, a series of specialists got involved to work-through issues including Eric, our sales support specialist, Alaina, the supervisor for Stan's senior techs and inspectors, and Gary, the warehouse manager. We would especially like to thank Say and Gabriel who did the final installation of our ERV. However, what truly set them apart was that Roland, the Vice President of Installations literally ""Cleared His Desk"" to help us work -through countless details until the job was completed ... over one month later! That is why I choose to write this review and congratulate them on a job well-done!

Sincerely,

Michael Edelen

Charged me $96 just to come out. And then charged another $225 to LOOK for a leak for 10 minutes. They didn't find anything and left. So $321 just to look for a leak that they failed to find -- I'm scared to find out what they'd have charged to fix one!

Stan's is the most honest and professional
A/c and plumbing company that I've ever had the pleasure to work with! Over the years we have had minor issues with our A/c in both of our homes. We were so lucky to have the same technician, Chris Hull and he is the absolute best! Once he assessed the situation, he explains everything step by step as to the work that needs to be done. I never once felt like I was being taken advantage of....as I have several times in the past! If you are in need of an a/c repair...make Stans your first call!!

The tech price that came out very knowledgeable was honest quick and didnt try to take advantage of my mom. They were cheap and quick to fix the ac. The reason for my 3 star was the customer service the 1st woman who answered Brianna left me on hold for quite some time so I hung up and called back and got her again I told her you left me on hold for quite some time and she said well im busy and put me on hold again. I held for maybe 40 seconds and called back and didnt get a greeting but put back on hold which a very nice lady Angel did finally pick up and apologized for putting me on hold and took my call other than that I would have gave a 5 star review. Remember the 1st impression is the impression if my mom hadn't use stans before and wasn't stuck in her old ways I would have ended the relationship with you.

I am disappointed with Stan's because of their follow-up. A new evaporator Coil was installed along with some other duct work. After the evaporator coil was installed no one bothered to clean up. I cleaned up water bottles, screws, pieces of cut metal, etc. Then after paying for a wider diameter duct run, no one came back out to measure the improvement in heat. Therefore, did I get what I paid for.

I had spent just over $4000 dollars in late August of last year. Now, I have water filling up in my drip pan. Unbeknownst to Stan's, I did have my drains flushed and had another HVAC company check my system. Water was leaking from the plenum and into the drip pan. Both the primary and secondary pipes were clean. The secondary pipe has an automatic shut-off.

When I called Stan's and described my issues, the lady answering the phone said my issue was a clogged drain pipe. It was my issue and should have had their maintenance plan. Ironically, another HVAC guy was at my house and he reaffirmed they were wrong and should cover their work and labor.
That lady had then hung up.

My 2nd call to Stan's was better and they scheduled a technician to come out. The young technician told me my pan had water due to the pipes being clogged and he would charge me a total of $300. At that point, I told him that I already had two plumbers out here and another HVAC company. I pointed out where the water was coming from. At that point, he opened up the system and said the installer had used the wrong sized catch. He reached out to his supervisor, then told me they may have to replace the evaporator coil.

My 3rd call to Stan's was the same. This time the representative apologized and said she would get a supervisor to contact me. No one did. My 4th call, I was told there were no notes, but a part was on order.

I gave Stan's time and tried to be understanding. However, I feel that their follow-up and customer service after installation, basically sucks. I am frustrated enough to take the time and write a detailed review of their lack of quality installation and clean-up. Their lack of warranty service. They accuse the customer of something before looking at the problem. Still waiting for a supervisor to call me back to tell me they stand behind their work and will make things right.

AVOID STAN'S AT ALL COSTS

They have installed 4 systems for me, but when something goes wrong? Management and owners STICK THEIR HEAD IN THE SAND, NO care for their customers, no contact, while liability and bills pile up... do NOT do business with these uncaring people.

HOUSE FLOODED -- electrical blown out including water heater because they switched a circuit to 220v unwisely -- but it's the MOLD, THE FLOODED system that they installed, and no matter who I talk to a the tech or dispatch level, NOBODY upstairs will call me. EIGHT messages left. These owners and management, despite great folks, care NOTHING about their customers or the disasters they are causing. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE UNCARING PEOPLE. They have made my house unlivable and I can't even get a call from management. Stan's owners & management should be *ashamed.* P.S. There is still all sorts of water in my house and the latest person who cares is trying... WHERE ARE YOU OWNERSHIP??? *This* is how you respond to customer catastrophes of your own making??? This picture, if this is what you want... call Stan's.
