Last Friday the prospective buyer of my condo hired Milestone Electric to examine its breaker box because a home sale inspector had 'concerns' about it. After the Milestone electrician looked at the breaker box he told me that it was 'faulty' and 'dangerous' and needed to be moved and be replaced and up-graded because it can't be located in a closet, and it's present amp load exceeded its capacity by 40 amps. He said he thought that a city inspector should look at it to determine if it was safe.
The work and up-grades he was describing would easily cost $5,000.
I've been in the paint/ construction business for over 30 years and I know that my electrical breakers and the box have been 'grandfathered' into and pass current residential code requirements. The condo community where I live has 270 units with the same electrical equipment configuration as mine, and I've never heard of a fire or any electrical issues resulting from faulty breakers or faulty breaker boxes. And I'm not aware that a breaker box has ever had to be moved or replaced to pass a home sale inspection.
The Milestone electrician was either unfamiliar with the city electrical code requirements or was trying to sell me equipment and labor I didn't need. He said he'd check with his supervisors and left.
About 5 minutes later he returned and said that my breaker box was NOT faulty or dangerous, and that the present breaker amp load didn't exceed its capacity, it did NOT have to be moved or replaced. He said a city inspector didn't have to look at it, and the breaker box was safe and would pass inspection.
I've had enough history with construction and codes that I questioned what the Milestone electrician said about the condition and location of my condo's breakers and box. But I wonder how many people have the knowledge to ask the kind of questions I did.. and I wonder how many people might have been alarmed and persuaded by the Milestone electrician's report, and agree to purchase the up-grades and re-location he recommended.
Updated Review:
I will update and say that they did call me back saying there was a mistake in me being charged for the ""service call"" and they had refunded my money. I have not checked yet to make sure it was done, but I think they wouldn't go through the trouble if they didn't. In addition a manager called and left a voice mail after seeing my review on here and did say he was sorry for the mix up and asked what they could do to get my business. I think I will try them on my alarm system once my contract is up on the old one because they do offer a lot of extra's with it (hmmm, just read another review on the alarm system...now not so sure, but anyway...). Also I appreciate the fact that someone took the time to respond to my concerns. Most companies would not do that. As far as the landscape lighting I am still getting estimates but they do seem inline with what most are charging.
Original Review:
Very nice and professional but I just wanted an estimate on some landscape lighting, most places will estimate for free. Not this company. Was not told about the 69.99 ""service fee"" just to come talk to me until they were here and went through everything with me. Then gave me a ""free"" electrical inspection. If they had told me on the phone when i called it would be $70.00 for an estimate I would skip. The pricing for the installation wasn't too bad so will still consider them for what I need done and maybe their alarm services, but $70.00 JUST to get an estimate? A little ridiculous if you ask me. They could have spent 5 min telling me what it costs and be done, then I probably would have hired them to do it on the spot. Now I'm getting some more FREE estimates. I wish someone had just told me on the phone I was going to be charged before hand.
I've used Milestone twice now and the only reason I don't give them 5 stars is I hate paying a lot of money for simple issues. That said, you are going to pay a chunk for ANY electrician to come to your house so you might as well get a good one. Their technician Trey was very professional and personable. He explained all my options before I approved any payment for the work. Both times they have come to the house they completed their work in a timely manner and were very courteous about covering their footwear and cleaning up the workspace. I paid about $330 to have them trouble shoot a circuit upstairs that had caused power interruption to my wife's home office. Maybe it's something I could have fixed myself but working with electricity is not something I'm comfortable with so I just have to live with paying that kind of money to have someone come out and perform the work. Trey was very thorough and took his time to check all the avenues of the problem.
Mike M.Previously had ADT as my security company. I had a broken contact on my back door, and they were going to charge over $125 for a 30 minute service call to fix it. After several attempts to get in touch with a sales Representative, I gave up.
Instead I was able to get a completely new, wireless security system installed (with 3 alarm zones) for $40, with a 3 year contract. The installer (Scott) was VERY professional and did and excellent job! I would definitely recommend Milestone for anyone wanting a new security system, or who is offended by the outrageous service call fees that ADT charges.
As soon as I posted this review, I heard from an employee of Milestone. Although, she tried to explain the situation she still wasn't able to grasp the severity of an $8000.00 up charge. So, she finally forwarded my email to the General Manager, who contacted me immediately. He, patiently, let me tell my story. He seemed sincerely apologetic and offered to refund my money completely. Which was pretty unbelievable. Besides the money, which is great, what was most important to me was that someone higher up listened to me. These are the things that make a good company better. I think the work Milestone did on my house was probably excellent. It was the experience that was bad, they more than made up for it by responding so graciously once I posted my complaint.
Caroline O.My ceiling fan light suddently did not work. I had company coming and had heard that Milestone would come out fast. They did. But they charged me $134.75 to ""replace a loose connection behind the switchplate"". This was with the $50 off ""dispatch fee coupon"". More bothersome was the peddling of additional products like the protection plan, etc. I also got a quote on two more projects in the house. The price kept changing, evidently the way to get a break is to sign up for more repair. The sales techniques seems to be to quote more and lower the price the more you add on. Before you know it you are looking at $900 when really, just the fan was broken. If you have a small job, prepare to pay big. The service rep who came out was friendly the first visit, second visit he pouted and complained that I did not sign up for the other two jobs. I really doubt if I call them again, too much selling and prices too high.
HORRIBLE company; took 4 hrs for the tech to find a minor short in my wall outlet. He was totally incompetent; WORST PART: he does an ""inspection"" and says I need $7000 worth of upgrade work. Their whole goal is to turn an inexpensive call into a major overhaul of your elec. system. AVOID like the plague! BTW: apparently, their employees write tons of these glowing reviews, so buyer beware!
Janine S.Wow.My regular electrician was booked so I called Milestone. They gave me a quote of $429 for a job my regular electrician charged me $240 for ! When their rep saw I wasn't going for it he started talking about how my house was going to burn down because we had a bad electrical panel. He said it would be between $3000 & $5000 to fix it .I spoke to my regular electrician and he agreed it needed to be switched out but quoted a price of $2200 firm !
From now on I will wait for my regular electrician.....Frisco Electric !
I ""strongly"" suggest that you shop around. Their prices are astronomically high (bragging that they don't charge by the hour), but their ""job"" prices are crazy.
Many of these ""rave"" reviews seem suspicious unless these customers don't realize how much they overpaid.
Very polite and professional -- but overpriced. Go to Lowes and you'll see outlets and breakers for around $15 or $20 -- they want $200 to change one (not including the service fee for showing up) -- a 10 minute job!
Shop around!
Ridiculously overpriced! Over $700 to replace to 6 GFI outlets. Over $400 to install 2 ground rods. It goes on and on. Call for a 2nd opinion before you overpay.
