Five or Free Electrical Solutions

I decided to try Five or Free for some electrical work I needed in my garage and also in our bedrooms. I was adding several light fixtures and also adding an electrical outlet in the garage. For the cost of the work performed, I felt they did an adequate job, but I was not impressed with their organization or follow up.

I had to correct an invoice as they did not remove an item that the on-site electrician stated was not needed. If I hadn't caught that, I would have been over charged.

I also had to follow up on the permitting process to make sure that this was all done according to code and filed with the city. I feel like they should have been more proactive in making sure that this was communicated and scheduled accordingly.

Finally, there was a switch that was not installed correctly and had to be corrected by a follow up visit which took a couple of months after the initial work.

I don't mind paying a little more for high quality work and good communication, but I feel they fell a little short in both of these areas.

The fuse controlling our kitchen blew right after the holidays. It appeared that it needed to be replaced.The office was responsive in setting up our appointment and I received text messages throughout the process. Alex came out and was able to reset the fuse without any repair. Even though the service visit was scheduled and Alex had to travel 20 mins out to our place from his previous appointment, we were not charged for the service. Other companies were quoting $100 or more just to show up. Thanks Alex and 5 or Free - you will be our first call if we have any other electrical issues.

I could not be more pleased with the service I received from the folks at Five or Free. PG&E had sent me a letter requiring me to have a ground wire moved. I contacted Five or Free on Monday morning and spoke with John who kindly and promptly set me up with an appointment for Tuesday. John was cool (we spoke for a minute) and after learning I am a veteran he encouraged me to apply for the company's veteran discount (really helpful).

On Tuesday Tim A came by in the morning to assess the need. He was on time, quick, and super friendly. The team set me up with a same day appointment to get the job done. Later that afternoon Tim returned and knocked out the job in less than 30 minutes including patching up a wall. The work was done well and done quickly. These guys are GREAT. You've earned a customer. AND thank you for the great price. Again, thanks Tim and team for being so excellent. Two thumbs up.

I hired Five or Free to mount and install a couple new ceiling fans for me and they did a great job throughout. Both the estimator and the techs who did the work were friendly, knowledgable and happy to answer questions.

I was especially impressed with Josh; he asked me all the right questions to ensure that the job got done exactly how I wanted rather than assuming, which I definitely appreciate. He was also more than happy to explain and go into more depth when asked, which I especially appreciate as a DIYer who tries to know his limits.

Another small touch that I wish was more common: In addition to the arrival window (which they were always on time for), they notify you through email and text when they're on the way rather than leaving you to wait and guess.

I definitely will look to them in the future when I need electrical work done.

My entire experience with Five or Free was incredibly positive, starting with the estimate by Alex, through the email communication to finalize the job, and finally through the incredible installation work by Tim. This company just hires really well and sets very high standards for themselves. They are also outstanding communicators and very respectful and helpful, checking in throughout the process the perfect amount. And Alex and Tim were just so nice. I appreciate people that are experts at what they do and I will gladly go back and use Five or Free again.

Firstly, the representative that came to give me a quote was on time and courteous - he explained everything and applied discounts where he could; I don't think my experience was a problem with my particular representative.

I contacted Five or Free Electrical Solutions to remove an existing level 2 Tesla wall charger I already have installed (which cost $700 to be installed in the first place) and replace it around 6 feet away on the same wall with a NEMA 14-50 outlet; essentially replace the hardwired car charger with an equivalent appliance outlet - yes there was some slight rewiring required since a longer wire was needed.

The quote I received - with a plentiful 10% discounts applied - was an astounding $2,884.50. Note: I am not an electrician so perhaps some of the work on the quote was required - but I'm doubtful seeing as the circuit I was quoted for is already present, I already have a level 2 charger installed. The permitting fee of $600 is arguably not required also because the outlet would have also been within 6 feet of the junction box, and looking at local permitting fees you are charging more than $500 over the cost of the permit.

Thankfully, I did receive much more reasonable quotes from competitors so will not be using Five or Free Electrical Solutions. Please do your due diligence and get competing quotes especially for car charging! Like I said getting my charger installed originally was only $700, being overcharged more than $2000 with seemingly unnecessary line items is somewhat disingenuous.

Very happy with Five or Free Electrical Solutions. They were communicative, prompt, efficient. This is the way to run a business.

Communicative: I got a quick response to my service inquiry through Yelp. At every step from initial contact to all my emails, to booking, etc. replies were immediate. I was kept informed if a new issue popped up. Multiple confirmations, both written and voice were sent. While I liked talking to a real person, I also appreciated the written confirmation detailing the job expectations.

Prompt: Tim, the electrician, was great. The main office messaged me before he arrived but Tim also texted and called me with his ETA. My time is just as valuable as my wallet. I appreciated that he showed up when he said he would.

Efficient: Tim quickly evaluated the problem and gave me an upfront recommendation. His diagnosis was pretty accurate but he was honest when other problems emerged. He patiently explained the issues and I didn't feel ripped off. Price seemed comparable to others. Not cheap but I don't begrudge them making a living.

Above and beyond: Tim didn't have a part and promised to return first thing in the morning to complete repairs and he did. I've worked with tradesmen in the past with no sense of urgency or respect for the customer. Working with Tim is great and Five or Free Electrical Solutions will stay on my reliable contact list for future electrical needs.
