He earned a Certificate in Air Climate Control and Refrigeration from DuPage College, as well as an Associate's Degree in Applied Science. He owned a Commercial Refrigeration Company for four years. In 1987, he earned a Commercial Electricians License and began his Electrical Contracting Business. After moving to Georgetown, Texas in 1989, he established Norrell Electric. He obtained a Certificate from Imagine Solar in Austin and has installed more than 43,000 watts of solar power. Tom and his wife Debbie share a three-acre home with their faithful dog Shelia. They harness photovoltaic energy and solar hot water for their energy-efficient foam-insulated home. With 11,000 gallons of rainwater storage, soon to be 22,000 gallons, they nourish their raised bed gardens and melon patches, while chickens help control pests.
