When I was 19, I took a computer course at Alu Like, and my teacher, Papa Mika, saw that traditional office work wasn't for me. He told me about a unique jobs program for women at the Richards Street YWCA.

The YWCA's N.E.W. (Non-Traditional Employment for Women) program featured women discussing various non-traditional careers, such as carpentry, metalwork, and cooking. One instructor, Carlita Martinez, an electrician, brought in materials for hands-on learning. She introduced us to a large plywood sheet, pipes, junction boxes, and various wires. She taught us the workings of a light switch by having us bend pipes, connect wires, and assemble an electrical box. I knew instantly that this was the path I wanted to pursue.
