At 19, I enrolled in a computer class at Alu Like, and my teacher, Papa Mika, saw that traditional office work wasn't for me. He told me about a unique jobs program for women at the Richards Street YWCA.

The YWCA's N.E.W. (Non-Traditional Employment for Women) program featured women discussing various non-traditional careers, such as carpentry, metalwork, and cooking. One of the instructors, Carlita Martinez, an electrician, came with tools for hands-on training. She introduced us to a large plywood sheet, pipes, junction boxes, and various wires. Carlita demonstrated how a light switch operates by guiding us through bending pipes, connecting wires, and constructing an electrical box. I knew instantly that this was the path I wanted to pursue.
