When I was 19, I took a computer course at Alu Like, and my mentor, Papa Mika, understood that I was not suited for office jobs. He told me about a unique jobs program for women at the Richards Street YWCA.
The YWCA's N.E.W. (Non-Traditional Employment for Women) program featured women discussing various non-traditional careers, including carpentry, ironwork, and culinary arts. Among the instructors was Carlita Martinez, an electrician, who provided materials for practical experience. She brought a large piece of plywood, pipes, junction boxes, and wires. Carlita showed us how a light switch functions by allowing us to bend pipes, connect wires, and build an electrical box ourselves. I realized immediately that this was my calling. For me, it was a complete transformation, a shift in perspective, realizing, ""This is what I want to do."".
