When I was 19, I took a computer course at Alu Like, and my mentor, Papa Mika, understood that I was not suited for office jobs. He told me about a unique jobs program for women at the Richards Street YWCA.
The YWCA's N.E.W. (Non-Traditional Employment for Women) program featured women discussing various non-traditional careers, such as carpentry, metalwork, and cooking. One of the instructors, Carlita Martinez, an electrician, came with tools for hands-on training. She arrived with plywood, a bundle of pipes, junction boxes, and electrical components. Carlita showed us how a light switch functions by allowing us to bend pipes, connect wires, and build an electrical box ourselves. I realized immediately that this was my calling. This experience was a profound transformation, a shift in my understanding, and knowing, ""This is my true calling."".
