The YWCA's N.E.W. program showcased women talking about different non-traditional professions, covering fields like carpentry, ironwork, and being a chef. One of the instructors, Carlita Martinez, an electrician, came with tools for hands-on training. She brought a large piece of plywood, pipes, junction boxes, and wires. Carlita showed us how a light switch functions by allowing us to bend pipes, connect wires, and build an electrical box ourselves. I knew instantly that this was the path I wanted to pursue.
