When I was 19, I took a computer course at Alu Like, and my mentor, Papa Mika, understood that I was not suited for office jobs. He introduced me to a non-traditional jobs program for women at the Richards Street YWCA.
The YWCA's N.E.W. program showcased women talking about different non-traditional professions, such as carpentry, metalwork, and cooking. One of the instructors, Carlita Martinez, an electrician, came with tools for hands-on training. She arrived with plywood, a bundle of pipes, junction boxes, and electrical components. She taught us the workings of a light switch by having us bend pipes, connect wires, and assemble an electrical box. I knew instantly that this was the path I wanted to pursue. For me, it was a complete transformation, a shift in perspective, realizing, ""This is what I want to do."".
