Jerry attended Ft Myers Middle School and graduated from Ft Myers High School in 1977. Throughout the years, Jerry has been involved in supporting youth sports in Lee County. He has coached youth soccer with the Cape Coral Soccer Association and youth basketball through the Youth Basketball Association of Lee County (YBA). The secretary/treasurer, Debbie Martin, comes from Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Her family moved to Lee County, Florida in 1972 due to a job transfer. She graduated from Ft Myers High School in 1979 and earned a BS degree in Finance from the University of South Florida.

Jerry and Debbie met in 1980 and tied the knot in 1982. In 1984, they had their only child, Nick. Nick graduated from Bishop Verot High School in 2003 and from the University of South Florida in 2008.
