I enrolled in WECA, an apprenticeship for electricians, having minimal experience about construction. Over the course of the five-year commercial and residential apprenticeship, I acquired comprehensive skills in various electrical systems. I completed the five-year apprenticeship within the expected timeframe in 2010, despite I was short on hours due to the commercial market crash in 2009, which caused a two-year slowdown.
I felt weary of being the least experienced on the totem pole. Reluctant to travel for extended durations, I was laid off whenever the workload decreased. So, I made the decision to build my own totem pole. With every layoff, I began taking action to establish my own company and cultivate it for growth. It showed promise, but I received too many offers for jobs exceeding $500 (the cap for handyman work), and too few jobs under that amount. As a result, I reduced the handyman business and worked towards obtaining my electrical contractor's license.
