As the son of Calvin, a mason, I have fond memories of accompanying him to work from a young age. He eventually became a general contractor, constructing many houses. I helped him by carrying bricks, blocks, and cement, doing whatever tasks he required. I helped him with home construction, and I think I drilled my first electrical hole at the age of 7. Truthfully, I came to dislike construction as I aged and wanted to explore different avenues. During my college years, I took a temporary job with an electrical contractor that was meant to last just three days. Things went well, and I completed the work in a day and a half. He told me I could keep working if I remained productive. I realized I loved the work and had a talent for electrical wiring. Wanting to get married quickly, I dropped out of school and worked full-time as an electrician. More than 20 years later, I run my own business, have enjoyed 24 years of marriage, and have six children. I feel blessed.
