Our tenant called to report that the power was going on an off. The electrician who we called went over and 'fixed' the problem. The next day it was worse. It was Saturday and we couldn't get hold of that electrician to go back and check it out. We made several calls to find another electrician and the only one who answered his phone was Van. He sounded friendly and knowledgeable on the phone and did a very thorough job inspecting the home and pinpointing the problem. We highly recommend Van and thank him for a job well done!

I am sorely disappointed with Van's Electric and cannot understand how he had such a great rating when he let me down two times in a row. First, he stated he would come by my home between 4:00-5:00PM the day after (Saturday) I contacted him through Yelp (Friday night). Only when I texted him at 6:30PM on Saturday, he called me back saying he couldn't make it. He was pleasant enough and we accepted his excuse he was busy and could not help us unless it was after two weeks (he's busy). He said he would give us an estimate first. We thought we still would give him our business even though we would have to wait two weeks for him to do a repair. He says he's a Christian on his Yelp page and a second generation electrician. We felt he would be dependable and honest.

So, that (last) Saturday evening, he told us he would give us an estimate after assuring us he would come over late one evening this week to do so (the following Saturday was too busy for him as he had a large installation job at a church). . . and we believed him that he would come over to do this estimate. We finally had to text him Thursday evening (5 days later) asking him if he was planning to come over to do this estimate. He texted back, ""Sorry, too busy."" That was it.

As a business person, especially one who depends upon the quality of service being done, the responsibility to follow through, and the trust and bond that must be created between customer and company, I will not recommend Van's Electric to anyone. It would be a mistake to recommend someone irresponsible and misleading. We've asked ourselves why Van couldn't have planned ahead to talk to us earlier in the week that he didn't have the time to help us?

Our conclusion is he didn't have the common courtesy, business etiquette, or foresight to speak to us explaining or apologizing for his empty promise. I learned one thing about using Yelp, begin looking at the negative comments first. I was the fool it seems not to have more seriously checked the bad reviews before calling Van's Electric.

I called Van to repair a dead line in our house. He immediately called me back and scheduled a repair for 3 days later. As he didn't show up, I called him - it was apparent he forgot the apptmt. I rescheduled for a few days later (gave
him the benefit of a doubt) and he was again a no-show. Not a call, not an apology, and for me - not ever again. I immediately called another electrician who came the same day and resolved the issue.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I called Van to schedule an appointment and he agreed to 6 p.m. Thursday. I left work early to be able to meet him, but he never showed up. I called him and he said he ""dropped the ball."" Against my better judgment, I agreed to have him come two days later. Well, he failed to show up again. I called, but this time he didn't answer the phone. Instead, I left a voice mail. BUT HE NEVER CALLED BACK. Never apologized. NOTHING. I wound up using another small firm that came when they said they would and did the work for much less than what Van quoted me. When small businesses have to rely on word of mouth to get jobs, you'd think they'd try really hard to service their customers.

Called Van Fri night, he returned the call with 10 minutes and scheduled a visit on Sat. He walked me through some troubleshooting over the phone, had me send some photos of the switch box. He arrived promptly and had my electricity fixed within 20 minutes for a very reasonable (especially for Hawaii) price. Overall, outstanding service! Van will be my go-to electrician from now on.
