Stan Johnson Sr., a lifelong Austinite, always had a talent for mechanical work. After a stint as a partner in a filling station on Barton Springs Road, he worked as a union carpenter before finding his true calling at a local AC service company. Stan made the decision to establish his own company. In 1954, Stan and his wife opened their own AC service business, centered around his knowledge and commitment to serving customers.
The first office for Stan's was situated in the backyard of a home at Denson and Guadalupe. It was during the mid-1960s that central air conditioning became accessible to most central Texans. The Stan's Family has always been a leader in the installation and servicing of air conditioners in Austin, and we take pride in continuing that legacy today. Stan's has also expanded to meet all plumbing needs and continues to serve the Austin area with a large team of skilled and trained plumbers.

Recommended Customer Reviews

Stan's appears to be either too big for its britches, or not as ""customer friendly"" as they would like you to think. Took me 8+ hrs to get a tech out here to investigate a broken system. When the tech arrived, his first diagnose was a broken circuit breaker - really? After determining I had a broken compressor, I was then told that I would be able to get a replacement from them for 9-10 days. Really, in the middle of summer in Texas? Also, there prices seem to be on the high-side - and they don't lay out all the options as others did. I ended up going with another company, and am glad I did. They showed up with 1 hr of me calling them, CORRECTLY diagnosed the situation, and had my system installed within 24 hrs. Now THATs customer service!

Gee whiz, what a great company.
We recently contacted them to service the air conditioners at our comedy theater (The New Movement in downtown Austin) because one of our A/C units was making a loud rattling noise. Their technician, Tyler, came out, serviced both units in a fast, thorough, and friendly manner, and gave us some tips about keeping our A/C's healthier and happier (which pretty much involves servicing them more than once a year and not shoving burritos into them all the time). Their prices are fair, and thus far, they seem to be very attentive 24 hours a day.
We are now loyal customers of Stan's and we will defend their purity, integrity, and general awesomeness throughout the forthcoming decades.

Stan's used to be a very good company. Their techs were paid an hourly rate so there was never a need to rush through and do a half-fast job. When the new management took over (Strand Brothers) they changed it so the techs get paid per call, which makes it in the techs' best interest to do the minimum and get out.
In addition, if the tech gets stuck in our infamous Austin traffic, they aren't getting paid for that. To make up the difference, the tech has to push repair parts, which they now earn a commission on.
This is a very common place pricing strategy used by many A/C companies, and I was saddened to see Stan's had become just another A/C company.
Also, service has been really luck-of-the-draw. They have some great techs, but also a few very not so great techs. That's probably why most of these reviews are either 5-star or 1-star. Good luck with that.
They even took away their long standing senior citizen discount policy. I handle the paperwork for my wife's mother in Sun City, which is what really prompted this review. There's just been a downward trend the past couple seasons, and I just found out why.
The 2-star ""Meh. I've experienced better"" rating for Stan's is the best fit. Not amazingly terrible, but the quality/price ratio just isn't what it used to be.

The reviews for Stan's that were written prior to 2012 were probably referring to the previous owner as I believe the Strand family purchased Stan's sometime in 2012. The current owners (Strand family who sold their prior business to Service Experts) is fantastic. This is the old Austin feel we had with the old Strand Brothers. The Stan's Heating and Air Conditioning today is great. I own several rental properties in Austin and they have always been timely, efficient , professional and friendly.

Over the weekend, of course, my A/C decided to go all mixed medley on me, blasting lukewarm air then slightly cool and back to sweltering. First thing Monday morning I completed the online service request and within 5 minutes Lisa called to say she could have a tech out later that afternoon. Really?? You mean today?? James arrived at the front end of the alloted time frame. He was very polite and friendly, even after learning the main component was on the roof of my complex and he needed to get a longer ladder from the office. Within minutes he returned and accessed the repair. Originally he said it was the motor and gave a quote. After maybe 30 mins of roof time he said it actually wasn't the motor, explained what was going on and said the needed repairs would actually cost about $100 LESS! There ARE honest peeps out there! Quick, efficient, and honest. I now notice from other reviews they have a 24 hr service line. Added bonus they are near my n'hood so I'll definitely use Stan's again.

I've been a customer with Stan's since the Strand family joined the company, and prior to that, with the older Strand's company for about 10 years combined time. The service with Stan's is on the same excellent level as it always has been. Their service people are knowledgeable and courteous, regardless of the time of day or night. I've searched many years for an reliable company for heating and cooling, and I wouldn't use anyone else.

BEWARE These people are scam artists that want to inflict as much damage as they can on to your family. They were at my house for 15 minutes and wanted to sell me a new AC system for 10,000 dollars. What they got for 15minutes was 270 dollars, Thanks John your the greatest just BEWARE

Two Days after the repair service from Stan's, I received a phone message from them. Assuming they we're doing a follow up on the service, I was surprised when the messagthis dictated they wanted to update their information as to the owner of the house. The woman asked if I was the new owner or just someone watching the house, and asked me to call her back to update their information on who the current owner is.
I found it very strange and intrusive. I have owned the house for 10 years. Maybe they need to work on the customer service on the front end.

I came home from vacation yesterday afternoon to no AC in my house. A phone call to Stan's at 2:00pm and they had a technician to my house by 3:30. He (John) was very courteous, knowledgable, and had the parts he needed on his truck. I appreciate their prompt and professional service!

The only 24 hour repair business that is actually 24 hours. My AC broke on the day it hit 106 and I came home in the evening to find a hot house and panting dogs.
I called all the 24 hour repairmen google could find and the ones that answered their phones said they could schedule me for the afternoon of the next day which is obviously not truly 24 hour service.
I called Stan's after hours number, left a message, and had a return phone call from a technician within an hour.
The repairman came out and fixed everything up at 10:30 at night and the cost was totally reasonable.
This business is owned by the people who used to own Strand Brothers. The current corporate Strand Brothers business is slow and unhelpful so if you're used to the old service of Strand from when they were a family business, you'll find that kind of local business service with Stan's.
