Matt came out to install house lights. He first asked for money for supplies, which I foolishly gave him, ahead of the job. Never do that!

He installed the cans and the wiring, but never brought the actual lights, or additional supplies. He also did not give me a receipt for the lights until I threatened to file suit.

He did not return at least 10 calls or emails over a 2 week period. He always had another excuse about why he could not finish the job or get the supplies I paid for. And then he still didn't return my money for supplies not purchased.

He still owes me over $500 for the lights, which he never bought or installed--I ended up buying them myself, hiring another electrician to complete the work, and hiring another drywall repair guy to repair and repaint the ceiling where he busted through.

I am considering filing suit against him, and would never hire him again.

Matt is a genial person, generally, and understands electric wiring well. But he is irresponsible and not trustworthy: caveat emptor.

And *never* give him money for parts ahead of the job: buy them yourself or have someone else who is knowledgable buy them.

In my large job, which was installing 23 LED retrofits, 4 closet lights and 2 external outlets, and the dimmers for all, which he did not complete, he

a. asked for pre-payment of parts, with checks made out to him or his brother personally

b. has not returned over $500 of overpayment for those parts, as he documented, or the actual receipts for those parts, as he said he would

c. has not completed the work and damaged the dry wall around several soffits, and suggested I hire a drywall guy to repair them (which I did)

d. did not repaint the areas around the drywall, as he said he would

e. charged a very high rate for said supplies, which he said was his cost (I have not verified, but find the same simple closet light on Amazon for 30% less than he charged)

f. only provided an invoice for the apparently purchased parts several weeks after they were purchased and the invoice was requested, and did not provide the receipts, as he said he would

g. did not come to the job, or call to cancel, or email to cancel at least 8 times over 5 weeks, and did call or email to cancel or reschedule at least 5 more times over the same period.

h. falsely advertises on his Dodge truck and on his website (mjelectric.com) that he is BBB A+ rated (he is actually rated a D)

i. repeatedly promises to do nearly everything above--complete the work, return the money,come to the job, provide docs--but does not.

j. refuses to identify what is causing the problem, which at least one co-worker says is atypical; he then identifies many different causes sequentially. His car breaks, he is ill, he is fighting with a relative, he is having dinner, he is busy on another job, he can't get my money back.

h. conducts himself in a risky way: he jumped on the bed to install a can, damaging a sculpture on another part of the bed; smokes in the driveway, though he is careful to put out the butt; does not clean up drywall dust from floors or appliances.

Matt came to our home to fix an outlet that was working intermittently. The next day, it did not work again. He did not return our calls (said his phone broke.) I called from a different number and he answered. He said he would call back in two days, he did not. I called again and asked him to please fix the problem or refund our money ($79.) He has not returned my calls. If you don't stand behind your work, you should refund your charge.

Matt is the ULTIMATE PROFESSIONAL. He showed up right on time, did an excellent job of relocating our dining room light fixture, took extra care with our furniture and cleaned everything up afterwards. He was extremely polite and courteous and charged a very fair and reasonable amount for the work.

Matt came to my house on a weekend for a few small electrical jobs. He did an excellent job, finished it all quickly, didn't charge extra for parts, and did it all for a great price. The job seemed too small for a yellow-pages electrician and I didn't want a craigslist electrician that I didn't know anything about come into my house. Luckily a friend recommended Matt and now I know who I will call if I ever have a problem. Highly recommended.
