Joe's great!! I have a 2nd home in Waikiki, needed some electric work in December 2017, called Joe he came out next day. Joe did great job and price was very reasonable. Would / will use him again.
Joe put in 3 lights and a stove hood fan/light ......he was reasonable and very pleasant......
I called this morning inquiring about help for a bum electrical outlet and a ceiling fan. He came over same day working around my schedule on a weekend and fixed everything for an extremely reasonable rate. Couldn't be happier, I can run my washer again and I have air in our living room!!
Joe was so awesome, personable and did an amazing job in a flash! He has been in the line of business for years and knows his stuff for sure.
My only regret is not finding him sooner!
I've just emerged from an awful experience with Joe Hunt, the owner of this company. I will spare all the gory details, but essentially he ended up stealing $400 dollars from me. Initially it was $2400, but thanks to me filing a formal complaint to the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Regulated Industries Complaints Office, I was able to leverage, with this agencies assistance, to be repaid $2000.
It started last November when I purchased a Waikiki condo built in 1979. During the inspection, it was recommended that the circuit panel be replaced as that which was there wasn't safe. I figured while the electrician was there, I would have him do some rewiring, change out some wonky outlets, and install some recessed lighting fixtures. I found Joe Hunt via his Craigslist.org posting on a Friday.
He agreed to come by the following evening after work to look at the job. Coincidently, he had lived in the building years before and knew how cheaply the electric had been installed back when it was built. He came with a friend, and upon signing an agreement with Scope of Work addendum I had prepared, and shaking on the deal, told me he would like to start the work on Sunday. Fine with me. BUT...he would require a $200 dollar cash deposit then and there so that he knew I was good to my word. It seemed pretty fishy to me and I explained I didn't have that kind of cash in my wallet. He offered to wait while I went to the ATM. Like an idiot I did, gave him the money, and as quickly as he came into the picture that evening, he disappeared. Pretty much for good. I never saw the man in person again ever.
Sunday rolled around and, of course, I didn't hear from him. I work in Kona, so essentially, Monday - Friday I am away from Honolulu. The total project was to cost $4400. He told me he would require a 50% deposit to purchase materials, to which I had agreed.
On the following Monday, I called him from Kona and asked what had happened? ""Oh, it was Sunday and the Patriots were playing and I wanted to watch the game. Besides, I need the deposit before I can begin"" I was told. Again not listening to the little voice inside, and thinking better of it, I dutifully overnighted the $2200 check to him.
Check was cashed immediately and it was a series of one excuse after another as to why he couldn't get to starting the job. Calls, texts and even a letter from my lawyer, went unanswered. This went on for 5 weeks. Not wanting to wait any longer, I hired another electrician to finally do the work.
When threatened with a formal complaint to RICO, the governing board who issues professional licenses, he finally agreed that he owed me the money and promised up and down he would pay back every penny. ""Just please don't file a complaint. I may not be able to pay it all back right away, but I will make payments, I promise"" was the plead.
That wasn't true and after continued excuses and another couple of months, I filed a formal complaint. It wasn't until the RICO investigator contacted him and the issue of his license being revoked became a possibility, did he decide to step up to the plate. However, he lied and said he had attempted to go to the apartment, twice, to do the work, but on both occasions was turned away by my daughter, who wouldn't grant him access. And for that I should be penalized $400. The funny thing is, I don't have any children. I'm not even married.
The investigator told me Mr. Hunt was willing to repay $2000 in four (4), $500 installments, commencing on June 1, 2016. If I agreed, I would have no further recourse in collecting the $400 nor would any kind of blemish appear on Mr. Hunt's license. Essentially, he would be in good standing with the licensing board. WHAT????? Are you kidding me? But $2000 was better than nothing, so I agreed.
As of last week, I've received the final payment. As far as RICO is concerned, J & H Electric is an upstanding, reputable electric contractor and if you contact them to inquire, you probably won't know anything about my case. While I had to agree not to pursue this matter any further legally, I wanted to make it well known via social media. If RICO isn't willing to do their job and warn people of shady contractors like Joe Hunt, then I will take the matter into my own hands.
In the meantime, I recently checked craigslist.org to see if J & H Electric is still advertising. What I found didn't surprise me as much as upset me. Another person had posted an account of her awful experience with Joe Hunt and was soliciting people to contact her if they had experienced the same. As I read it, it was an exact re-telling of my sad tale; deposit required then never to be seen again. Difference was she suspected credit card fraud and some work had been completed on her project, but done so poorly, that it was recommended it be torn out and started again from scratch.
Find another electrical contractor. You'll thank me.
