Over the years I have hired several contractors for my home and not sure if it is just bum luck but I have had major issues with nearly all of them. Meigs Hewlett is the first guy that not only took the time to get the job done right, but he also checked back later to make sure my wife and I were completely happy.

Not only is he the nicest, most trustworthy guy I have ever worked with, he takes the time to explain everything he plans on doing and why he did it.

To give just one example of how strong the customer service is, I had called to ask him a question about some electrical work I did on my own with a switch. He actually stopped by on his way home and looked over my work. He gave some input and let me know that the box I was using in the wall was probably not the best and that i should use a different type. I'm so glad i called him. The funny thing is that when i tried to pay him for stopping by, he said...don't worry about it and that he wanted to make sure I did it right. He wouldn't take my money!

Top notch guy all around and I would not hesitate having him do any electrical work for us.

I don't normally write reviews or even really comment on businesses unless they do something I really *don't* like, so for me to be writing a review on a business that has done something really good is almost unheard of. I just got a washer and dryer. Dryer didn't work when the installer came to hook it up - specifically, it didn't get hot, and when I tested the outlet with a voltmeter I only got 120V instead of the necessary 240V. This is an old house, all kinds of things are funky with it, so my first thought is immediately, ""crap, the outlet is totally hosed.""

While I was waiting for another company to call me back with an estimate, I called Hewlett Electric. Turns out that I didn't need to have an electrician come out and fix anything - Meigs spent about 30-45 minutes with me on the phone talking me through some troubleshooting and giving me some instructions on what to look for and what the problem probably would be, and ultimately I was able to find the loose breaker and just fix it myself. Not only did I just save a few hundred bucks, but I can do laundry today instead of having to wait for someone to come fix it. I am beyond impressed that he took the time to give me a bit of education on residential electricity so that I could do some voltmeter testing and perform what ultimately turned out to be a 30-second fix.

Not only that, but Meigs actually called me back to see if I'd found / fixed it. I wasn't even technically a customer and yet I got some fantastic customer service. If I need any electrical work in the future, I know who I'll be calling.

We hired Hewlett Electric because we needed to add outdoor light fixtures to our pergola. We chose this company because it is highly rated on Yelp.
This guys are good, and we highly recommend them !
Meigs clearly knows his business, and has great communication.
Kurt and Alex have been very professional and thorough.
We discussed with Meigs some additional work that we want to do at a later date, we will hire him and his Team again !

2/13/2014. Meigs at Hewitt Electric is amazing! He really cares that you are satisfied with his work. And that includes taking care of you after the job is done. Do yourself a favor and hire this guy!

2/28/2013. Everything we wanted fixed is working, and the job came in within expectations. We enjoyed having both Meigs (owner) and Kurt (employee) in our house! They were easy to work with, and to communicate with. Meigs solved two of our problems during the free estimate -- he's an excellent diagnostician. He is genuinely interested in customer satisfaction. We'll definitely call again if we need electrical work.

Tips on Electricians in General
* Specify ""free estimate"" if you want a diagnosis of your problems
* Ask about a guarantee and get it in writing
* Do expect an electrician to be expert on the wiring and outlets in your home.
* Don't expect them to be expert on the things attached to those wires (smoke alarms, light fixtures) -- it helps if you do your own research!

Tips on Smoke and CO Alarms
* California Senate Bill 183 requires the installation of a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector in rental units and dwellings that are being transferred (sold) by January 1, 2011. It also requires that CO detectors are installed in ALL homes by January 1st, 2013.
* Home inspectors will be required to report on the presence or absence of a working Carbon Monoxide detector, just like they report on Smoke Detectors, and water heater strapping. In addition, sellers will be required to disclose the presence or absence of a working Carbon Monoxide detector starting January 1, 2011.
* It's recommended that you replace smoke alarms after 10 years
* Look for a double sensor (ion + photoelectric) smoke detector.
* Lithium smoke detector 9-volt batteries are available at low cost. They should last for five years or so (vs. one for alkaline), so you won't be woken up by the low-battery chirping of your alarm as often.
* Get ""Smoke in a Can"" made by GE (or a similar product). ""Smoke in a Can"" tells you if your detector actually detects smoke, and will give you great peace of mind. Plus, it's super easy to use! The lights on the detectors do not tell if your unit actually detects smoke.

We had a home electrical issue today that required us to get PG&E out to assess the problem. Later, realized we needed a bonafide electrician and called Meigs. I left him a message at 9:01 pm tonight with no intention I'd hear back from him until tomorrow. He called back after listening to my message within 3 minutes. He spent 20 minutes talking to both my husband and myself discussing the problem we had. He was professional, polite and thoughtful. We will likely be able to fix the problem on our own thanks to his help! We will call upon him again and again in the future. Thank you for people like this who are still in this world!

They did a great job replacing my CFL can lights with LED cans. The 3 year warranty is impressive.

Meigs was extremely professional. They were recommended to me by a family friend. I had just bought a house that needed the service panel replaced. Meigs Called me back right away to schedule our work. It took a couple of weeks to get out to do the work; but they are a small business and well worth the wait.

The contractors were very professional, friendly, and willing to explain their work to a curious homeowner. Gave us a good orientation of their work once it was completed. They took care of all inspections, permits, and coordination with PG&E.

Would highly recommend for any residential electrical needs.

These guys were great. Not only do they do good work, but they bend over backwards to do things exactly the way you want.

My job was scheduled for three people, including Meigs, working for a full day. The job actually took a day and a half with no change in cost.

They are not inexpensive but, given the quality of their work, well worth the price.

I'll never have to use Yelp again to look for an electrician.
