Nick Lawlis founded Coastal Electric Service, Inc. in 2006, serving as both owner and operator. After spending eight years in the industry, Nick decided to start Coastal Electric to deliver quality service at reasonable prices to San Diego. Nick takes pride in his work, his company, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
Being owner-operated, Coastal Electric has an edge over big electrical companies, helping us keep costs down. From the beginning in 2006, we have welcomed every customer as if they were family. While other companies may provide similar services, our approach is exceptional and always includes a personal touch. Whether your project is big or small, we are dedicated to every job we complete!
Established in 2006 by Nick Lawlis, Coastal Electric Service, Inc. is led by its owner and operator. After completing a four-year apprenticeship and earning a Washington State Journeyman card, I relocated to San Diego to work for a major electrical contractor. In just two years, I progressed from a laborer to Superintendent. I managed safety, ordered materials, coordinated labor, and oversaw job site operations for 148 townhomes and 150 apartments in a six-story building downtown. After acquiring this knowledge, I made the decision to launch my own company. I have been serving the San Diego community ever since and have many satisfied customers.

Recommended Customer Reviews

Nick and Erica are truly a pleasure to work with. They are one call away from fixing your electrical problems. I recommend them because of their hard work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to hear you out.
Erica is very responsive to your requests and Nick works hard to find the issues at hand. They helped fix an electrical breaker that had broken. He also added another breaker for our hybrid, plug in vehicle.

Where do I begin? Our experiences have been amazing with Coastal Electric. Nick and Erica strive to make their clients comfortable from planning stages to execution. Erica is always a joy to talk with. Her client service is outstanding and her caring attitude really shows with all the effort she puts into providing great service. The response is always prompt and timely if I leave a message or need to be called back. Nick is always professional, on time, and considerate of his clients and even keeps his work area clean. The work completed by Nick and his apprentice's or associates is quality work. Nick is always a joy to work with and brings a great, helping, and caring attitude when he arrives as well as a personable way of communicating. His suggestions are well respected and he doesn't recommend or suggest unnecessary changes or upgrades unless there is a good reason. Coastal Electric has our business until they retire or we move out of San Diego.

I prefer speaking to the business direct than hide behind a bad review, and I did speak candidly with Coastal in this case. We had such a horrible experience working with Nick and his company, who was contracted by our GC for our home remodel, that it'd be doing more harm by not warning others before they consider working with Coastal. Four takeaways:
1. Nick has a problem communicating with women. He was so emotionally charged during a conversation that I had to suggest he leave the house because his anger was headed in an inappropriate direction. I was alone in my home, and it took a call from my GC while Nick was outside getting some air to put him in check.
2. If he makes a mistake, he will likely charge you for labor and materials to remedy the situation. Example: one day he agrees the placement of a light switch is ""embarrassing"" and ""not representative of the type of work they do."" The next day, he tells us that we'll be charged in order to fix his mistake.
3. Initial meetings seem fine, he comes off as a critical thinker. That quicky changes when you start realizing he should have paid closer attention to plans / taken notes during walkthroughs - ie. outlets and a ceiling fan on architectural plan were missed, light switches were awkwardly placed behind doors or missed altogether.
(Kudos if you're still reading this)...
4. We hire experts for a reason, right? With Nick, you have to become your own electrical expert because you may run into situations where you have to factcheck his professional suggestion. In our case, a quick Google search salvaged a major lighting expense in our home.
Bonus round! Electricians are expensive, we know this. It's a unique specialization, but don't expect to receive an invoice from Nick that includes anything more than a giant lump sum. We tried asking for clarification on some side hours billed (still, nothing seemed to match up), but decided it was easier to just pay it outright rather than going through the trouble of having to communicate with Nick and Coastal Electric.
Best of luck.

Nick was fantastic. He set up a 220 panel for us, through our attic. He was punctual, and did great work. Drywall had to be cut out, and he made very minimal cuts, only what was needed. Works great. Very knowledgeable.

Nick did a great job. Showed up wearing a mask. Completed the job in the time line that we were quoted. They were very professional and cleaned up when completed. We highly recommend this company and will use them for future jobs.

Nick did a great job on our project! He came when scheduled. He was able to complete the job quickly with no questions asked. Nick is professional and clean in his workmanship! we have other projects coming up and Coastal Electric will be our go to electrical contractor. Thank you Nick, I will recommend you to all my friends and family.

As usual, Costal Electric does not disappoint. Had Nick install 2 outside lights in my backyard. He was on time, very professional and did an excellent job for a reasonable price. Would never use anyone other than Nick. Highly recommend him for anything electrical.

Nick has done work for me personally several times and for the company I worked for many times as well. He does great work, is easy to deal with and is fast. I highly recommend Nick and Coastal Electric.

Nick was very professional, he was punctual and he did great work at a fair and reasonable price. Nick is very knowledgeable and is experienced in working in downtown high rises, which was perfect for what I needed. I will definitely use Costal Electric for any future electrical work and will recommend them to my friends, family and neighbors.

Coastal Electric was professional and prompt throughout my entire remodel. They re-wired my kitchen and even installed a supplementary panel since the electrical load was not sufficient. He was able to give me advice on placement as well as guiding me to places he recommended to source our light fixtures. Nick and his assistant were always polite and a joy to work with. If I ever need anything else done, I won't hesitate to call them.
